Rewards program focused to strengthen driver safety and improve safety compliance scores

Situation
A privately held Michigan based trucking company that operates in 48 states, Canada and Mexico was challenged to improve Department of Transportation safety rating. Targeted areas of improvement included: driver pre-trip and post-trip inspections, moving violations, turnover rate, and hours of service compliance. The trucking company contacted Boost Engagement to design and implement a rewards and recognition program concentrating on driver and equipment safety. Over 650 drivers comprised of company, owner-operator and spotter/switchers, with a combination of Less-Than-Truckload (LTL), Truckload (TL) and Expedited transportation services.

Solution
Client needed a recommendation that would define, identify and correct behavior for each individual driver group. Boost Engagement analyzed safety data, conducted driver surveys and held hours of Q&A with client to determine a list of behaviors that needed to be modified to strengthen positive work habits and diminish negative habits.

Six months later, a custom SMART (Safe, Motivated, Aware, Responsible, Trusted) Rewards driver recognition program was launched. Drivers are awarded points every month based on nationally published safety and compliance reports. For every error-free mile driven without a moving violation, safety violation, HOS or equipment violation, SMART Rewards points are awarded and drivers are then able to convert their SMART Rewards points to branded and non-branded merchandise.

Results
Within the first 9 months of the SMART Rewards program launch, DOT safety scores improved and the client’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) safety rating was improved from “conditional” to “satisfactory”.  Driver turnover decreased to below 50% and an impressive 80%+ of all drivers have been awarded points on a repetitive basis and stay engaged in the program.  Insurance costs and driver and equipment violation fees and fines have also been positively impacted.
